What Is CRO, and Where to Start

A plain-English guide to conversion-rate optimization: what it means, what actually moves the number, and the first three things to fix.

By Maha Khan · Senior Copywriter

You're paying for traffic. People are landing on your site. And almost none of them are becoming customers. Before you buy more traffic, ask whether the problem is how many people arrive, or what happens after they do. That's the job of conversion-rate optimization.

The short definition

Conversion-rate optimization (CRO) is the practice of increasing the percentage of visitors who take the action you want, buying, booking a call, filling out a form, by improving the page and the path they move through. In plain terms: get more out of the traffic you already have.

Why CRO is usually the cheaper win

Say 1,000 people visit each month and 10 book a call, a 1% conversion rate. You can spend more to bring 2,000 visitors and get 20 calls. Or you can fix the page so 2% of the original 1,000 convert, same 20 calls, no extra ad spend. Traffic has a per-unit cost that never goes away. A page improvement is paid for once and lifts every visit after.

What actually moves the number

CRO has a reputation for being about button colors. It isn't.

Where to start, three fixes in order

  1. Read your own page as a stranger. Do I understand what's offered and what to do next within five seconds? If not, that's your whole project.
  2. Match the page to the promise that brought people there. Line up your top traffic source with the page it points to.
  3. Kill the obvious friction. Cut form fields, speed up the page, remove competing links.

Most sites have so much low-hanging fruit that formal testing isn't even the first move.

Why the fix has to reach the page

Plenty of consultants will audit your funnel and hand you a list. That's the easy half. Changing the page takes people who can design and build, not just advise. At Pinn.Media the same team that studies the numbers also builds the page and the funnel, so when a step is leaking we fix it directly. Book a discovery call and we'll tell you which fix will move the number most.
