Amazon Listing Images and A+ Content That Convert

On Amazon, images do most of the selling. Here's how to plan a main image, secondary images and A+ Content that follow the rules and win the click and the sale.

On Amazon, shoppers decide fast. They scroll a page of near-identical products, click the one whose image stands out, swipe through the gallery and either add to cart or go back. Most of them never read the bullet points closely. Your images are doing the selling.

That makes the image set one of the most valuable parts of a listing, and one of the most commonly rushed.

The main image: win the click

The main image is the one shoppers see in search results. Amazon has strict rules for it, and listings that break them can be suppressed. The core requirements include:

  • A pure white background.
  • The product only, with no added text, logos, badges, borders or graphics.
  • The product filling most of the frame, so it does not look tiny next to competitors.
  • High resolution, large enough for Amazon's zoom feature to work.

Category rules vary, and Amazon updates its requirements, so check the current style guide for your category in Seller Central before you shoot.

Inside those rules, there is still plenty of room to stand out: the angle that shows the product best, showing what comes in the box if that is a selling point, crisp lighting, and making sure the product reads clearly at thumbnail size on a phone.

Secondary images: answer the questions

The rest of the gallery should answer the questions a shopper would ask in a store, in roughly the order they would ask them. A typical sequence:

  1. The key benefit. One clear graphic of the main reason to buy.
  2. Features, called out. The product with short labels pointing to what matters.
  3. In use. Lifestyle photos that show the product in a real setting, with the kind of person who buys it.
  4. Size and scale. Dimensions, or the product next to something familiar. This prevents many returns.
  5. What's included. Everything in the box, laid out.
  6. Comparison. Your product against the generic alternative, or your range side by side.
  7. Trust. Materials, certifications you actually hold, warranty, care instructions.

Add a product video if your listing allows it. A short clip of the product in use answers questions no photo can.

Design for a phone

Many Amazon shoppers browse on the mobile app, where images are small. Text on secondary images needs to be large, short and high contrast. A good test: look at each image on your phone at normal size. If you have to zoom to read it, the text is too small or there is too much of it.

A+ Content: tell the brand story

A+ Content is the richer section further down the product page, built from image and text modules. It is available to brand owners enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry. Use it to do what the gallery cannot:

  • Explain the brand. Who you are and why the product exists, briefly.
  • Go deeper on features. Detailed visuals of how it works or what it is made of.
  • Compare your range. A comparison chart helps shoppers pick the right product and can move them to a better-fitting one instead of a competitor's.
  • Handle objections. Care, compatibility, sizing, whatever your reviews and customer questions keep raising.

Your customer reviews and questions are the best brief for A+ Content. Whatever confuses buyers should be answered visually.

Keep the brand consistent

Shoppers who click from one of your listings to another should see the same fonts, colors, photo style and layouts. A consistent look makes a catalog feel like a brand, which supports repeat purchases and makes a Brand Store feel coherent. A short set of brand guidelines for Amazon content saves every new listing from starting from scratch.

Test and improve

Amazon gives brand owners tools to test listing content, including an experiments feature for comparing versions of images and A+ Content. Change one thing at a time, often the main image first, and give each test enough traffic to be meaningful. The thinking is the same as conversion rate optimization on your own website.
