What Is Scrollytelling?

Scrollytelling turns scrolling into a guided story with animation and interaction. Here's how it works and when to use it.

The best digital stories, the ones from big newsrooms and standout product pages, often share a trick: as you scroll, the page comes alive. Text, images, and animation move in sync with your scroll, walking you through a story one beat at a time. That's scrollytelling.

The short definition

Scrollytelling is a technique where scrolling drives a narrative. Instead of a static wall of text, the page reveals and animates content as the reader moves down it, tying the story's pace to the reader's own hand on the trackpad.

Why it holds attention

Where it shines

Where it doesn't

Scrollytelling is a poor fit for pages people want to skim, a pricing table, a contact page, documentation. Forcing a story onto content people want to grab quickly just gets in their way. It's a tool for narrative, not for everything.

The catch

Good scrollytelling is deceptively hard. It has to feel smooth on a high-end laptop and a mid-range phone alike, stay accessible for people who can't or don't want the motion, and never trap the reader. Bad scrollytelling is janky, slow, and annoying, worse than plain text.

Building it right

The difference between mesmerizing and motion-sick is all in the craft, the timing, the performance, and knowing when *not* to animate. At Pinn.Media we build these as a team across design and engineering, so the story feels effortless on every device.
