Webflow vs Custom Next.js: How to Choose
A plain-English guide to picking between a Webflow site and a custom Next.js build, based on what your business actually needs.

Every business that needs a new website hits the same fork. Do you build on a platform like Webflow, or go custom with something like Next.js? The wrong pick costs you months and a rebuild. Here's how to choose without the sales pitch.
The short answer
Webflow is a hosted platform for marketing sites you want to edit yourself. Custom Next.js is code you own for products and sites that do things a platform can't. Pick Webflow when content is the job. Pick Next.js when logic is the job.
What Webflow is good at
Webflow gives you a visual builder on top of real HTML and CSS. You design in the browser, publish, and your team edits copy and images without touching code. For a marketing site, a portfolio, or a small business site, that's often the whole story. Framer is similar in spirit, and so is WordPress if you want the biggest plugin ecosystem on earth. The catch: you live inside the platform's rules. Complex logic, heavy data, and anything a user logs into will fight you.
What custom Next.js is good at
Next.js is a framework for building web apps in code, usually with TypeScript and a headless CMS behind it. You reach for custom when the site is really a product, user accounts, dashboards, a booking engine, a marketplace with search and payments. You also own the code: no monthly platform ceiling. The trade is that someone has to build and maintain it.
The questions that actually decide it
- Who edits the site after launch? Non-technical team, often, on their own? Lean Webflow.
- Does anyone log in? Accounts and roles push you toward custom fast.
- How custom is the logic? Pricing calculators, real-time data, workflows all want code.
- How far ahead are you building? If it becomes a product in two years, start where you'll end up.
- What's the budget and timeline? Webflow wins both for content sites. Custom earns its cost when the platform would block you.
You don't always have to pick one
A lot of the best setups are hybrids: run marketing pages on a managed CMS your team controls, and build the app portion in Next.js. Visitors never see the seam. This is where one team for both matters, the brand holds together across the seam instead of breaking at it.
