What Is a Headless CMS, and Do You Need One?
A plain-English explanation of headless CMS, how it differs from WordPress, and when it's the right call versus overkill.

"Headless CMS" is one of those phrases developers say and clients nod along to. It's a genuinely useful idea, and also one that's easy to reach for when you don't need it. Here's the plain version.
The short definition
A traditional CMS like WordPress does two jobs: it stores your content *and* controls how the site looks. A headless CMS does only the first, it stores content and hands it out through an API, and a separate front-end (built in something like Next.js) decides how it looks. You cut the "head" (the display layer) off the body (the content).
Why anyone bothers
- Speed. The front-end can be built for performance instead of inheriting a theme's baggage.
- Flexibility. The same content can feed a website, an app, and a screen in a store, one source, many outputs.
- Freedom. You're not locked into one platform's templates and plugin quirks.
The trade-off nobody mentions
Headless splits one system into two, a content back-end and a custom front-end, and someone has to build and maintain that front-end. With WordPress, "change the theme" is a click. Headless has no themes; every look is custom code. That's power when you need it and pure overhead when you don't.
Do you actually need one?
- Probably not if you have a straightforward marketing site and a small team that just wants to edit pages. A managed platform is simpler and cheaper to live with.
- Probably yes if content feeds multiple places, performance is a real priority, or you're building something closer to a product than a brochure.
The honest answer is that most small sites don't need headless, and some get talked into it because it sounds modern. The complexity is real and it never goes away.
Getting the call right
The right architecture depends on what the site actually has to do, not on what's fashionable. At Pinn.Media we've built both, managed platforms for teams that want simple, headless setups for teams that need the range, and we'll tell you which one your project honestly calls for.
