What Is a Microsite, and When Is One Worth Building?
A microsite is a small, focused site for one launch, campaign or story. Here's when it beats a page on your main site, and when it is just extra upkeep.
A microsite is a small website built around one thing: a product launch, an event, a campaign, an annual report, a story. It usually has its own look, sometimes its own address, and a much narrower job than your main site. Done well it lets you build an experience your main site cannot. Done badly it is a second website you forgot you had to maintain.
Microsite vs a landing page
A landing page lives on your main site and borrows its design, navigation and domain. A microsite steps outside. It can have a completely different visual world, interactive moments, its own structure, and nothing competing for attention.
That freedom is the whole point. If you do not need it, a landing page is cheaper, inherits your existing SEO, and is one less thing to keep alive.
When a microsite earns its keep
- The idea needs its own world. A festival, a film, a product with a distinct personality. Forcing it into your corporate template flattens it.
- It is meant to be experienced, not just read. Scroll-driven stories, 3D product reveals, configurators and small games all need room the main site's layout does not give. We have written about scrollytelling and 3D configurators if you want the detail.
- It has a clear end date. Campaigns and events have a lifespan. A microsite can launch loud and retire cleanly.
- A partner is involved. A co-branded campaign often sits better on neutral ground than on either company's site.
When it is a mistake
- You want it for SEO. A new domain starts with no authority. For search, content on your main site almost always wins.
- Nobody owns it after launch. Dead microsites with broken forms and old prices are worse than none.
- It is a workaround for a main site you hate. Fix the main site.
What a good one includes
- A single, obvious action: buy, book, register, share.
- Analytics set up from day one, so you know if it worked.
- A plan for afterwards. Redirect it, archive it as a case study, or fold the best parts into the main site.
- Clear links back to the parent brand, so the attention it earns does not evaporate.
Built to be remembered
The best microsites are the ones people send to each other. That takes design, motion and engineering working as one piece, which is exactly how Pinn.Media builds them. Book a discovery call and we will tell you honestly whether your idea needs its own site or a very good page.
